How Many Ways Can You Be a Lifetime Athlete?

The title of this post is phrased as a question. The answer to the query of how many ways you can be a Lifetime Athlete is perhaps infinite. Literally, there are many, many forms that a vigorous, vital, robust and athletic life can take.

This week we profiled a number of lifelong peak performers on The Lifetime Athlete Podcast. I’ll provide a brief preview of that content.

On Tuesday the 23rd I had a great conversation with Lauren Hurst, author of North of Forty…Inspiring Stories of Older Athletes. Lauren is an accomplished athlete in her own right, with extensive experience in tennis, bodybuilding, martial arts, and triathlon. Her book features athletes from their 50’s to over 100 years of age, in sports such as squash, swimming, cycling, running, weight lifting, and much more. Their stories are indeed inspiring and quite informative. Messages like “just show up, be consistent, and where there’s a will there’s a way” shine throughout our conversation.

On Friday the 26th I had the pleasure of welcoming back Steve Speck and Mark Huelsing of Exo Mountain Gear as return guests to the podcast. We discussed Exo’s creation of tradition, community, and culture. Hiking and backpacking in wild places, challenging yourself, achieving goals and learning deeply from rich experiences. Our episode about their 2024 Death Hike (nobody perished) in the Grand Canyon was called Hike for your LIFE for multiple reasons.

Those podcasts showcase a variety of perspectives on what it means to be a Lifetime Athlete. Without judgment. We can learn so much from each other in this journey. Especially when our community is inclusive and open-minded.

In fact, I think I’ll be doing a future episode about using one’s athleticism and conditioning to not just survive, but thrive, in a major life event. Balancing training, recovery, and physical/mental output is very important when big changes occur in your existence. Relocation, marriage, divorce, new job, and other conditions can actually provide us with an opportunity to lean on the conditioning, versatility, and resilience that comes with being a Lifetime Athlete. More to follow on that.

I hope you’ve had a great April. In the Training Tribe, we’re on our final few days of deloading as we conclude the Strength and Hypertrophy Training Block, which was 3 months long. Now, as we head into May, we take some of our workouts outdoors as we begin the Power Block. Power training blends force and velocity in fun, and sometimes explosive, manner. If you are interested in a nationwide, year-round coaching and training community, T2 programming is exclusively available for Lifetime Athlete App members. The app is available on the App Store and Google Play.

The App has many other member benefits including our in-depth Courses. Right now many folks on our team are launching Fit for the Field.
