When Injuries Happen

When Injuries Happen

As Lifetime Athletes, we appreciate that training is essential for maximum health and optimal function through the lifespan. Unfortunately, and despite our best intentions, we are occasionally sidelined from our exercise endeavors by an injury. This usually doesn't mean the end of our fitness or athletic careers, but having an understanding of what’s going on -- and what we should do about -- an injury, can be extremely beneficial.

Dealing With Injury, Part 1 (Acute)

Dealing With Injury, Part 1 (Acute)

Fecal matter happens...and I’m not talking about BM’s. I’m talking about injuries. Many of these tissue-damaging events can be prevented through proper training and sound judgement, but despite our best efforts, injuries happen. And they are going to keep happening. But how we deal with them makes a huge difference in how rapidly and to what extent we come back from injury.

Dealing With Injury, Part 2 (Chronic)

Dealing With Injury, Part 2 (Chronic)

Now that we've looked at acute injury, as well as the cellular mechanisms and management progressions associated with damaged tissue. We recognized acute injuries as instantaneous, event-related episodes and gave some examples of how our bodies, and minds, deal with those situations.

What Every Lifetime Athlete Needs to Know About SURGERY

Hello everyone and I hope this day finds you feeling great and crushing goals! Today’s post is in response to some great feedback and questions I’ve recently received. Folks have asked “How can I train to prepare specifically for an upcoming surgery, what can I do to maintain at least some of my conditioning on both the front and back ends of a surgical experience, and ultimately how do I blend my rehabilitation with training in the longer term?”

The 2 Most Important Ways to Avoid Running Injury

The 2 Most Important Ways to Avoid Running Injury

For several years I had a large bulletin board on a wall in the clinic. On that board were a few dozen short phrases of advice that I had either come up with myself, or borrowed from someone else and gave them credit. I love the “quotable quote” or “words of wisdom”. Because of my extensive work in running and with runners, one of my original statements was: “To prevent most running injuries do two things: 1.) Land softly (when distance running as opposed to sprinting), and 2.) Maintain good frontal plane alignment.” The preceding statement was that simple “pearl” that kept injuries from happening in the first place. I had made this observation over the past several decades and excellent support for “landing softly” can be found in a new article entitled “Why We Get Running Injuries (and How to Prevent Them)” by Gretchen Reynolds in the ever-popular New York Times “Well” blog. The article cites a…

How to Fix a Runner

How to Fix a Runner

I was recently visiting with a client and she had given me some positive feedback about this platform. We got into a stimulating conversation regarding several running-related topics, including the prevention and treatment of injury. The discussion we had reminded me of a brief list of tips to address most running injury concerns. The list is essentially a series of cues I use in the clinic when assessing and treating injured runners. I've been deeply involved with running most of my life and that has included being a competitive runner, a track fan, a certified official, a gait biomechanics and footwear design researcher, a presenter, a race director, a trainer and coach, and a therapist who specializes in working with runners. The system I have developed is like most of my methods in orthopedic and sports physical therapy. It is a combination of basic scientific principles/facts, thoughtful observations, and a little common sense. Here…
